Concentration and formulation matter
Raw chemical crystals and formulated consumer products are not interchangeable. Mixing, dissolving and heat generation can create splash and burn risks. Prefer a clearly labelled product with controlled dosing over improvised chemistry.
- Concentration and physical form
- Heat-generation warnings
- Pipe and fixture exclusions
- First-aid and spill instructions
Consider a mechanical method first
A removable trap, plunger or correctly chosen hand auger often provides a direct way to address a local obstruction without leaving corrosive material in standing water. If an engineer may need to attend, they must be told what has been added.
- Access to the trap
- Presence of standing water
- Whether a solid object may be involved
- Likelihood that the problem is beyond the fixture
A safer decision process
- 1
Confirm the blockage is local
- 2
Choose a formulated product labelled for the fixture
- 3
Read all hazard and first-aid information
- 4
Use only the stated dose and equipment
- 5
Secure the remaining product in its original container
Caustic soda can cause severe chemical burns. Never mix it with acids, bleach or any other cleaner, and never improvise a concentration.
