Four systems that are easy to confuse

Report the system that is affected, not simply the nearest visible water.

Private drain

Internal plumbing and a drain serving one property within its boundary are generally the owner’s or landlord’s responsibility.

Public or shared sewer

Yorkshire Water handles most city public sewers, but parts of Doncaster use Severn Trent or Anglian Water. Confirm by bill or postcode.

Highway drain

Adopted-road gullies and local road flooding usually go to the relevant council. A gully on private land remains with the landowner.

River or active flood

The Environment Agency manages main-river incidents and publishes live warnings. Use the current service rather than a static risk statement.

Why the pages differ

There is no single Yorkshire drainage pattern

Local topography, geology, river systems and infrastructure change both the likely mechanism and the correct reporting route.

Pennine cities

Sheffield and parts of West Yorkshire have steep, fast-responding catchments where becks, culverts, roads and sewers can interact.

Vale of York

York’s flat gradients, combined historic sewers and high river levels create a different drainage and pumping problem.

Ripon gypsum

Soluble gypsum-bearing ground means drainage leaks plus settlement or new depressions require a structural and geotechnical route.

Hull lowlands

Hull is low lying, uses extensive pumped drainage and sends most surface water into the sewer system.

Doncaster drainage districts

Flat and sometimes below sea level, Doncaster spans three wastewater regions and three Internal Drainage Boards.

Aire and Calder corridors

Leeds, Bradford and Wakefield combine dense urban drainage with major rivers and extensive tributary systems.

Regional evidence

A large network, but responsibility is still address-specific

Yorkshire Water’s May 2026 drainage plan records about 53,000 kilometres of sewers, 2,633 wastewater pumping stations, 601 treatment works and roughly 1.3 billion litres collected, treated and returned each day. Those regional figures explain the network’s scale; they do not determine who owns a particular pipe.
